Virginia Road Elementary School
Like many educators Principal Davita McCauley is committed to her students and her school. Virginia Road Elementary in the Crenshaw area of Los Angeles is a 100 percent Title One school, and while that means that the students mostly come from disadvantaged backgrounds, it doesn’t mean that they’ll be short-changed in their education. McCauley and her staff are fully behind their students, doing what they need to do every day to make sure they’ll have opportunities in life. McCauley patrols the hallway, visits classrooms and works to ensure lesson plans are strong. She admits, it is a challenge, but when it comes to her students futures and the preparation it will take to give them shot at success, it is more than worth it. McCauley uses her Lottery funds for basic supplies. And while she’d love to buy computers, notepads and other hi-tech items to help her students, using Lottery money for supplies frees up other funds to run their Parent’s Center. The center offers parents classes in finance, nutrition and other life skills. “We want this to be a mecca for learning and a safe haven for parents so they’re not embarrassed to say I need help”, said Principal Davita McCauley. After all, a strong parent is more likely to develop strong students and in the end, we all profit from that. Congratulations to you, Principal Davita McCauley.
