Social Studies Teacher
L.A. County High School for the Arts, Los Angeles
Many people can say they were influenced by a special person in their lives. For some former students, that person is none other than Jerry Freedman.
The list of Freedman’s accomplishments is huge. He’s spent the past 31 years as a Social Studies teacher at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. It’s there that he has really made his mark. Freedman has been named as an LA County Teacher of the Year and has been selected as one of L.A.’s “Most Inspirational Teacher” award winners. He’s even received certificates of recognition from both the California State Senate and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Freedman doesn’t just talk about current events -- he lives them! “I have friends who retired 20 years ago, and all I could think of is the generations of students they never met,” Freedman said.
Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim of the band HAIM remember Freedman so fondly that they publicly credit their former teacher for having played a role in their development. “His class was our safe zone to speak freely, voice our opinions, and share our dreams,” the band said in a statement. “He is someone that all three of us look back on fondly and still talk about today.“ So much so that Haim took the opportunity to return to their high school to stage a surprise “Thank you!” to Freedman.
