SACRAMENTO – At 82-years-old, Bernard Rosario is still going strong (and looking quite youthful for his age, we might add) – working as an on-site manager for a 22-unit apartment complex in Los Angeles County. On his break Sunday, he decided to go to his favorite Arco ampm on Redondo Avenue in Long Beach to purchase some Scratchers® tickets. That’s when the situation got, shall we say, “rich” with confusion.
“He (the clerk) gave me the wrong (kind of Scratchers). And none of them were winners,” remembered Rosario. Instead of getting the 20X The Money tickets he had asked for, he got another game. No big deal, at the time at least. It would have been perfectly okay had he won something; but since he wasn’t so lucky this time, he knew he couldn’t leave before he got what he came for. “I told the clerk to give me the other three (20X The Money Scratchers). Every one of them was a winner!”
You heard right. He bought three more Scratchers and they all paid him some money! One was worth $6, the other $20 and the last one, a whopping $200,000! A simple mistake in communication ultimately helped turn a lazy Sunday into a huge payday. “He (the clerk) ran (the $200,000 ticket) through once and said ‘no,’ but then he ran it twice and he said, ‘oh you won!’” laughed Rosario.
So what was Bernard Rosario’s reaction when he saw all of those zeros on his receipt? “I was in shock! I think he (the clerk) was more excited than I was.” This isn’t the first time Rosario has been excited playing the California Lottery. He won $1,000 last month, and won $500 before that on a Smokin’ Hot Cash Scratchers. Smokin’ Hot – probably a good way of describing his luck these days!
As for the $200,000 he just won, Rosario – being the good dad he is, says “I’ve got a bunch of daughters I want to take care of (a bunch being three).” So will he keep trying his luck at Scratchers? What a silly question! “I play when I have an itchy finger.” Scratching is obviously more lucrative for some than others! “People do tell me ‘you’re a lucky person!’” We can’t argue that!
