  • ‘Numb and in Awe’ – Los Angeles Massage Therapist Teams up with Dad to Win $1 Million

  • Carlos Castillo and his father enjoy playing California Lottery Scratchers games together. Naturally, they’d always hoped they might win a huge prize one day. But more than anything, they just like playing because it’s something fun they can do as a family. “We at least try to get our money back when we play. If we can break even, we win!” Castillo explained with a laugh.

Well, this father and son team from Los Angeles did way more than break even on a $10 Million Dollar Multiplier game they bought earlier this month! When Carlos scratched the sixth of 20 boxes on the ticket, he saw lucky number 13, along with these seven digits: $1,000,000. Just like that, he and his dad had won the game’s top prize. They were instant millionaires!

“I couldn’t believe it. I was numb and in awe. I had to have my dad double-check the ticket to see if it was real,” Castillo said. “It took maybe an hour for all of it to sink in!” Earlier this year, they both won $400 playing Scratchers. Ever since, they’d been using that prize money to fund all their Scratchers purchases – hoping they could parlay it into something bigger. And that’s exactly what they did – essentially using “house money.”

Castillo and his dad seem to have playing California Lottery Scratchers down to a science. Using the California Lottery website, they map out the various lucky retailer locations in their Los Angeles neighborhood, and then pick out the games they want (buying two of each). Then they scratch them together.

It’s a win-win strategy because it doesn’t matter which one of them gets lucky – they’ve always agreed to split any prize, no matter how big or small. “Oh, I will definitely be splitting the [$1 million] with my dad. I mean, he made me!” Castillo joked. “I just ended up having the lucky stack this time!

The 28-year-old massage therapist, who lives with his dad, says the game plan is to use his share of the $1 million prize money to buy a home and to go back to school.

Castillo and his dad purchased their winning ticket at Eleven Mart, which is located at 1059 S. Alvarado Street in Los Angeles. This lucky retailer wins as well because it will be receiving a $5,000 retailer bonus check just for ringing up that lucky ticket! (The retailer prize is paid from a separate fund and is not deducted from the winner’s prize money.)
