  • Winery Worker Credits Heavy Valley Rain for $750,000 Top Prize Scratchers® Ticket Win in Lodi!

  • When it comes to the eye-opening amount of precipitation we’ve seen this winter, not everyone is complaining about the substantial number of problems the rain is causing. In fact, you might say Lodi resident Jason Prewett has 750,000 new reasons to like the wet weather!

Believe it or not, the 35-year-old happily credits torrential rainfall for helping him win the $750,000 top prize on a Mystery Crossword Scratchers game back on January 31! You see, a road in Lodi that Prewett normally takes to buy his Scratchers tickets was closed that day. “So much rain that it was causing a mud slide. It was washed out.”

Instead of buying his Lottery tickets at the store where he wanted to go, Prewett ended up having to go out of his way to buy two $10 Mystery Crossword games at the Save Mart (1340 S. Hutchins Street, Lodi). The detour paid off with the $750,000 win! “The best decision I ever made!” Prewett said with a big laugh.

Considering the soggy circumstances, it was only fitting that the drive up to Sacramento to claim his $750,000 ticket was also a rainy mess (complete with a jackknifed big rig that briefly shut down Interstate 5 near downtown – the route Prewett needed to take to get to the Lottery’s Sacramento District Office). Faced with road closures in trying to buy and claim his ticket, Prewett said, “I didn’t used to like the rain. But now I love it!”

Prewett successfully matched 10 words on one of the Mystery Crossword games he bought at his new lucky store. “I saw the tenth word on the bottom [of the ticket] and then I started freaking out. I started celebrating, I was jumping up and down – I was crying. First thing I did when I got home was hand it to my wife to make sure [I had] won.”

Interestingly Prewett, who works at a Lodi winery, said he received a junk email a few weeks prior to his win “from a random psychic telling me something in my future was going to happen like never before. Don’t know if I should start talking to [psychics] now!” Prewett joked.

Prewett, who says he’s won $1,000 a few times before playing California Lottery Scratchers games, hopes to be able to buy a home now. “I’ve never owned a home. Also, would like to pay off some bills – buy my wife a car. That would be nice.

“My grandma used to go to the horse races and she would win all the time. I told my grandpa when I was probably 20 years old that I feel like one day I’m going to win something big. And it happened!”
