The new year is already starting out right for one family. Jerry and Gina Villa won $750,000 on a $10 Mystery Crossword Scratchers® that was sold in the Central Valley. The couple detailed a list of unique circumstances that led to their big win. Starting with how the lucky buyer even went to the CVS located at 1456 East Yosemite Avenue in Madera (Madera County) in the first place.
“I had stopped at the CVS to get some Dayquil for my son who was sick,” Jerry Villa said. While there, he also bought a ticket from a Lottery vending machine that dispenses Scratchers. Even that lucky move was one that could have easily bypassed him. “The machine has two of the same Crosswords,” Jerry said. “I pressed the bottom one.”
His wife added more twists to the story. Gina Villa explained that she is the one who typically opts for convenience when buying tickets…not her husband. “He didn’t like me getting them out of the machine,” Gina said, before adding this little nugget. Even if she had been the one in that particular store and buying from that specific machine that day, they might not have been so lucky. “I don’t play Crosswords,” Gina said. “I play the other stuff.”
So, in an instant the stars seem to have aligned in their favor. “It’s such a big relief,” Jerry said. “We’re gonna buy a house.” The timing couldn’t be better. Jerry, who works as a cook supervisor, recently turned 50 and the thought of buying a home with a 30-year loan worried him. This sudden and fortunate set of circumstances certainly changes things. “It’s kind of a big weight off my shoulders,” Jerry said. “I’m extremely grateful.”
