Dana Schaeffer couldn’t stop giggling when she walked into the California Lottery’s Inland Empire District Office this week. That’s because she had just won $150,000 on the Fantastic 5’s Scratchers® game and was in complete shock.
“You scratch it off and you just don’t really believe,” said the 50-year-old mother of three.
Schaeffer kept laughing and even cried a bit. And then the jokes started. When asked if she told her children about the win yet, she jokingly replied, “No! Are you kidding?!” She then added, in between more laughs, “This is mine!”
Schaeffer’s big win came after a chance encounter with a store clerk a couple of weeks ago. The clerk mentioned that a lottery player recently won $500 on the Fantastic 5’s Scratchers, so Schaeffer decided to try it. She started winning $10 and $20, here and there, and with each win she’d buy more tickets, usually on her way home from work. But this weekend, she decided to buy from a different store, and boy did it pay off!
“I bought five tickets and the third one I scratched was $150,000,” Schaeffer said as she tried to fight back more giggles and tears. She plans to use some of the money to buy a new car. “The rest of it is just going to go in the bank.”
At the end of the interview, Schaeffer had one last request regarding this press release. “Make sure you put in there that my kids are not getting anything,” she said with a hearty laugh.
Schaeffer bought her winning ticket at M & M Liquor Market, which is located at 15661 Mauna Loa Street #A in Hesperia (San Bernardino County).
